Parkinson's makes movements smaller, slower and harder to sustain — hands included. Practice built around one principle — think big — has real evidence behind it.
Parkinson's reduces the amplitude of movement: actions become smaller than intended, and repeated movements — like writing a line, tapping, or buttoning — tend to shrink and slow as they go on. That's why handwriting gets smaller across the page (micrographia), why fiddly tasks tire quickly, and why the problem is about the brain's calibration of movement size, not weakness in the hand.
Because the underlying problem is under-scaled movement, training that deliberately exaggerates movement size has become a cornerstone of Parkinson's therapy — it is the principle behind amplitude-based programmes used by physiotherapists and occupational therapists worldwide (Farley & Koshland, 2005, showed that training focused on large amplitude improved the speed and size of movement in people with Parkinson's). For handwriting specifically, an Oxford study (Oliveira and colleagues, 1997) found that external cues — visual targets showing how big to write, or simply being reminded to “write big” — brought writing size back toward normal while the cues were present. Cueing works; the challenge is keeping it up, because the benefit fades when the cues stop. That is an argument for building cues into regular practice, not for practising once.
Discuss any routine with your Parkinson's team or an occupational therapist first — and if your medication has clear “on” periods, practising during them usually goes better (worth raising with your team too). General techniques used in therapy include: warming up with large arm circles and big strokes on paper before fine work; writing between widely spaced lines and consciously filling them; finger taps and piano-style lifts done deliberately large and full, a few minutes at a time; everyday dexterity practice (coins, buttons, clothes pegs) done unhurried; and short, frequent sessions — little and often beats occasional marathons. Home-based dexterity training programmes of exactly this kind have shown improved fine motor function in trials (Vanbellingen and colleagues).
Practice helps you use the movement you have and can improve day-to-day function; it does not slow or change the underlying condition. Research on intensive handwriting training in Parkinson's (Nackaerts and colleagues, 2018) also shows trade-offs — pushing size can cost speed or fluency — which is another reason a therapist's eye on your technique is valuable.
